Staying hydrated with the Street2Feet water bottle at our weekly training sessions. |
Our program is a conservative training model which incorporates strategically placed incentives to encourage and motivate participants to become strong, healthy athletes and individuals. Participants that enroll in our program must have an updated physical that clears them for exercise, which can be done for free at Haven for Hope at Centro Med. Once cleared, participants sign a waiver and program expectation agreement. Participants agree to attend training -3 times per week, follow program expectations and guidelines.
We train at Garcia Park, near Haven for Hope, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. All of our clients run/walk at a conservative pace, and we provide incentives based on class attendance, participation, and achievement. Each training begins with stretching, announcements and prayer lead by participants. Participants sign in and report number of laps completed. We meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for yoga, body weight movement, light stretching, and other forms of accessible movement. These class periods are also opportunities for community volunteers to lead classes such as Qigong, yoga, dance. Likewise, class days are opportunities for community partners to join us for wellness related information sessions. Community partners include, but are not limited to the SA Food Bank, SACADA, and Airrosti. Participants are expected to move for at least 30 minutes following stretching and bring their water bottle filled with water. Credit for attendance and laps are contingent on following these guidelines. The following incentive structure is available to those participating in our program:

After attending 10 consecutive training sessions (or participating for roughly 3 weeks), clients become eligible to run/walk in 5k races throughout the community without paying a registration fee. In addition to running, our participants volunteer at local races in order to give back to the running community that has been so generous to Street2Feet.
Our runners also participate in our monthly health clinic where they attend a presentation on topics such as nutrition, mental health, injury prevention, mediation and the like. We also use this time for our group to come together and receive information on topics relevant to them, as well as distribute monthly incentives and awards, which celebrate and recognize the efforts of our athletes. |
